Together in Sanctity | Together Easter Series

Reading | Luke 22:7-23

Reflection

The Last Supper occured on Passover, a Jewish holiday commemorating how God rescued the Israelites from the last of the 10 plagues in Exodus 11:4-6. In this story, God commanded the Israelites to mark their doorposts with blood from a lamb. This act would save their household from death, sanctifying them in the eyes of God.

It is no coincidence that Jesus used Passover to draw parallels between the sacrifice of the lamb in Exodus 12 and the sacrifice He was about to make. They would both accomplish the same thing -- to secure rescue and ransom for the people of God. The big difference is that Jesus’ sacrifice would sanctify them forever, making them holy before the Father for all eternity.

Jesus teaches the disciples how to take the meal together, because He knows that memory is best kept when done in communion. It’s a binding meal that tethers us together as holy saints before a compassionate God. It’s faith, freedom, and fellowship -- all wrapped up in a sacrament that points to our sanctification.

That’s what community does. It remembers, it reminds, and it revisits. Because of Jesus, we know how to be together in sanctity.
